It is with much excitement that we offer the first single-vineyard bottling from our newly resurrected Clarendon Vineyard Estate.First planted in the 1840s the historically important property had been abandoned and unpruned for nearly ten years when we purchased it in July 2020. Its fair to say that weve poured our heart and soul into its rejuvenation.After taking such a leap of faith its wonderful to see what this celebrated old hill has provided given some love and attention.We invite you to share the reward of our efforts. 2023 Bekkers Clarendon Syrah Single Vineyard Selection.Sold exclusively as a three-bottle wooden case to encourage evaluation of the wine throughout its evolution.Emmanuelles reflectionsA wine close to my heart on so many levels. The result of Tobys hard work resurrecting our Clarendon Vineyard Estate and the delivery of an aromatic profile that transports me back to the Northern Rhone Valley each time I smell it.On the nose Crushed groseilles redcurrant and raspberries sprinkled with cannelle cinnamon and Indian spices. The palate offers depth and persistence. Whole bunches long slow fermentation and maturation in 500L French oak deliver a wine with length and smooth velvety complexity. The rich red fruits are balanced by white-pepper and spice notes.The 2023 Clarendon Syrah was hand-picked from two distinct vineyard parcels. 67 of the fruit was destemmed and berry sorted. 33 was added as whole bunches to the fermenter. It was envisaged that this significant percentage of whole-bunch fruit would augment the Clarendon aromatic profile.The wine was subsequently matured in 500L French oak puncheons for 16 months 33 of which were new barrels. It was bottled in July 2024 with a view to preserving freshness and aromatics.
