The 2020 Mickan Block Durif Shiraz is a bold dark and brooding blend that showcases the complementary strengths of these two varieties. Deeply coloured and intensely aromatic it opens with blackberry plum cocoa and subtle earthy notes before unfolding into a rich full-bodied palate. Durif delivers structure and depth while Shiraz adds plush fruit and warmth creating a wine that is powerful yet balanced with fine persistent tannins and a long satisfying finish. Sourced from the red-brown loam and chocolate clay soils of the Mickan Block it was crafted through small-batch ferments with minimal intervention and matured for three years in seasoned French oak before twelve months in bottle. One of our personal favourites it was featured during Young Gun of Wines Vineyards of the Year trade tastings in 2024. Dark expressive and textural this wine drinks beautifully now and will evolve through 2030 pairing well with slow-cooked brisket barbecued ribs chargrilled steak lamb shoulder and robust aged cheeses.

A spicy rich wine with density and weight it rolls across the palate like heavy rain clouds across the horizon it has movement and is baritone. It is in possession of that classic Durif character or so I see it of blue and black fruit and spice petrichor and gravel asphalt and flesh. Good Durif is both a little bony and quite fleshy at once. Tasting Notes
The 2020 Mickan Block Durif Shiraz is a bold and deeply coloured blend that immediately shows the dark-fruited power of both varieties. Aromas of blackberry plum cocoa and subtle earthy notes lead into a rich full-bodied palate. The Durif contributes intensity and structure while the Shiraz adds generosity and plushness resulting in a wine that feels both weighty and balanced. Fine persistent tannins and gentle spice carry the wine through a long satisfying finish. Expressive and textural this is a wine that offers plenty of depth now and will continue to evolve through 2030.
Winemakers Notes
This 5050 blend from our Mickan Block was crafted to highlight the complementary nature of Durif and Shiraztwo varieties that naturally enhance each others strengths. The red-brown loam and chocolate clay soils of the vineyard provide the ideal foundation for producing fruit with richness and structure. Fermented as a small batch with cold soak minimal intervention and gentle pump-overs the wine then matured for three years in seasoned French oak before twelve months of bottle age. One of our personal favourites it was proudly showcased during Trade Tastings for the Young Gun of Wine Vineyards of the Year Awards in 2024.
Food Pairings
This bold full-bodied blend pairs beautifully with slow-cooked beef brisket barbecued ribs chargrilled steak lamb shoulder hearty casseroles and dishes featuring smoked or spiced elements. Strong cheeses such as aged cheddar gouda and blue styles also complement its dark fruit and depth.

The wine was delivered by GSO Courier early this am and was in perfect shipping condition. The bottle temperature was cool to the touch which is amazing given we have been hitting 37C every day for the last week here in our California summer.

I have put the wine into our temperature controlled bottle storage to let them rest for a week (mostly for the 3 bottles of red). I did put one of the Rosés in the frig which we will try tomorrow because we are out to dinner tonight with friends.
Your Rose of Virginia is my favorite rosé, above French and Californians that we have consumed with Tablas Creek “Dianthus” from near Paso Robles being a second.
Now that we have experienced a shipment from you, I am sure we will order a couple of cases more but will wait until weather is cooler for us and the wine.
