The Sussex Squire Single Vineyard Samuel Block produces some exceptional fruit from 40yo dry grown low yielding vines. If the vintage condition are right and the fruit quality is excellent I will look at producing a single parcel of wine from carefully selected barrels in those years. These parcels of Samuel Block Shiraz sit in 100 new French oak for 24 months to add more depth and intensity and complexity.

Joseph Robert Sussex Hackett (1911 – 1998) – ” The Sussex Squire ” was my grandfather who lived his life on the land in the Clare Valley where for over 60 years he bred award winning Angus Beef Cattle. He was a man proud of his own grandfather who left Sussex County (UK) in the 1850s to embark on a new life in Australia and adventure to achieve award winning excellence in their own endeavours.Our Single Vineyard Samuel Block produces some exceptional fruit from the dry grown low yielding vines. Handpicked and left on skins in 1.5t open fermenters for 12 days and then drained through the basket press without pressing to reduce negative seed tannin. Two new French oak barrels were selected from our trophy winning Samuel Block Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. These barrels showed something special from the oak integration with the fruit. Aged in 100% new French oak for 24 months.

Tasting Notes
Dry grown Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with lovely concentrated dark black current and black cherry notes and balanced in 100 new French oak to balance the fine tannin structure that this vineyard can produce.Approachable now with decanting but will develop beautifully over the next 10Years
Winemakers Notes
Barrels are selected from the parcels of Samuel Block in new French oak. These barrels are then carefully maintained over 24 - 30months depending on the vintage to show case the balance of both fruit and new French oak. A double act of fruit and oak to meld together to produce layers of silkiness and complexity.

The wine was delivered by GSO Courier early this am and was in perfect shipping condition. The bottle temperature was cool to the touch which is amazing given we have been hitting 37C every day for the last week here in our California summer.

I have put the wine into our temperature controlled bottle storage to let them rest for a week (mostly for the 3 bottles of red). I did put one of the Rosés in the frig which we will try tomorrow because we are out to dinner tonight with friends.
Your Rose of Virginia is my favorite rosé, above French and Californians that we have consumed with Tablas Creek “Dianthus” from near Paso Robles being a second.
Now that we have experienced a shipment from you, I am sure we will order a couple of cases more but will wait until weather is cooler for us and the wine.
