The contrast between 2223 and 2324 could not have been greater. The 2023 dry season was one for the ages just 90mm of rain from May to October confirming La Nina was well behind us. That story continued through the growing season. The heavens held firm warm winter minimums pushed budburst to August and an early harvest became inevitable. Vineyard management came down to doing the basics right and hoping for relief. Fortunately three previous wet seasons had banked enough subsoil moisture to carry good vineyards through when summer heat arrived. Harvest came in a rush no gaps between Chardonnay Semillon and Shiraz everything in the winery by the first week of February and not much of it. The prolonged dry had done its work. Half was the word heard most at receival pads around the Valley and thats exactly what the weigh books showed half of what was expected. But good things come in small packages. The Semillons have tension and weight depth and delicacy wines to watch. For a glimpse of where they might go look to the 2005s and 2007s. Chardonnay and Shiraz are harder to read at this stage the Chardonnays are complex with a little more funk than the 2023s while the Shiraz is dense and compact with real tannin power. These wines will need time to unwind.

Tasting Notes
Golden yellow with a green fleck. Ripe golden queen peach with hints of buttered toast and ripe mango open the show. Subtle flinty complexity overlays with hazelnut praline and golden delicious apple. Creme Brulee with a breeze of lightly roasted Macadamia adding another dimension to an abundant and deep set aromatic profile. The wild yeast derived complexity draws you in further with preserved lemon and toasted Sourdough completing the picture. Ripe grapefruit and mandarin lead with custard apple and fresh quince stepping in drive the entry onto the palate. The acidity is a little latent but builds with time focusing salivating energy over the generous silky texture from Lees stirring and malolactic fermentation. The oak is subtle and sits nicely in the background complimenting the plush fruit persistence. This is a wine with power and depth of flavour.
Winemakers Notes
Picked on the 18th of January from two blocks Oakey Creek Road and Deaseys Road both low-lying vineyards on sandy loam soils. The 2024 season was warm dry and unrelenting with exceptionally low yields. What the vines didnt skimp on was flavour. Hand-picked cold-roomed for 24 hours then whole bunch pressed with 12 hours settling before a rough rack to barrel for wild yeast fermentation. Some lees stirring post-primary around 10 malolactic then 10 months on full lees in barrel.
Food Pairings
Scallops with crispy pork belly is an excellent pairing for this Charteris Chardonnay capturing both its richness and freshness in one dish. The sweetness and delicacy of the scallops reflect the wines ripe stone fruit and silky texture while the pork belly brings savoury toasty and nutty elements that mirror its notes of buttered toast hazelnut and creme brulee. A touch of citrus or preserved lemon ties in beautifully with the wines acidity adding lift and balance. Equally the components work well on their ownseared scallops with brown butter and lemon highlight the wines elegance and flinty complexity while slow-roasted pork belly with apple or quince leans into its depth with the acidity cutting cleanly through the richness for a harmonious finish.

About Charteris Wines

Welcome to Charteris Wines. Charteris is a story of exploration and connection. Its protagonist is renowned winemaker and senior wine show judge PJ Charteris, his wines, a lens to view time and place. Kiwi born PJ fell in love with the Hunter Valley in 1999 whilst working as the Senior Winemaker at the iconic Brokenwood Wines where he remained for 12 years before embarking on his pursuit for mastering Central Otago Pinot Noir & Riesling under his own tiny wine label CHARTERIS. Today, PJ's focus is keenly set on the sub regions within Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand & Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. Harvest timing across the ditch allows him the best of both worlds, crafting small batch wines that reflect the site & season from both world class wine regions. With over 30 years of winemaking experience & senior wine show judging sitting across regional and capital wine shows, PJ’s knowledge is second to none. With his partner Chrissi they have carved out a highly regarded reputation for producing their tiny but impressive wine portfolio.

Just a quick note to say I am so glad I found Australia Tasting Room! Since leaving Australia, I have missed some of my favorite wines. I researched other freight companies, but none offered the personal touch service of Australia Tasting Room. You have a great selection from the best vineyards. You added others upon request, and also gave great recommendations when asked. And customer service does not stop with the purchase— The team keep me updated on the shipment every step of the way! I cannot imagine a better service from people who know wine and love to share that knowledge. You have a customer for life! Cheers, J Mason

The wine was delivered by GSO Courier early this am and was in perfect shipping condition. The bottle temperature was cool to the touch which is amazing given we have been hitting 37C every day for the last week here in our California summer.
Well done!
I have put the wine into our temperature controlled bottle storage to let them rest for a week (mostly for the 3 bottles of red). I did put one of the Rosés in the frig which we will try tomorrow because we are out to dinner tonight with friends.
Your Rose of Virginia is my favorite rosé, above French and Californians that we have consumed with Tablas Creek “Dianthus” from near Paso Robles being a second.
Now that we have experienced a shipment from you, I am sure we will order a couple of cases more but will wait until weather is cooler for us and the wine.
Again thanks for an excellent wine and the good service.
Cheers,
Richard A.

The wine arrived last week in good shape - nothing broken or leaked. Your packing design is impressive. Laying it down for a couple of months to settle in. Looking forward to enjoying it. Thanks very much

Australia Tasting Room is a very fine company, with professional direction and management. I appreciate the friendly service, and all your efforts above and beyond to make all deliveries happen. Most impressive were the instant answers and responses any time I had a question. All during a pandemic! Pretty amazing when you think about it.
Highest regards,
Judy M
P.S. One Contact, One Process, and One Delivery - customers and wine treated equally and expertly, with care. You really can’t beat that! Great job.
