Mid-Winter 2023 in Central Otago was quite dry with September and October finally yielding some precipitation in the lead up an average budburst timing. The growing season got off to a good start with mild conditions leading into a warming and dry November followed by a very warm December. January and February continued the mild to warm pattern before a gentle abatement of summer and a few solid rain events through March and April. For the season overall the Growing Degree days were marginally above the long-term average so it looked like an average season but the warmth of early summer particularly December set the vines up for what looks more like warmer season results. The wines are plush and generous with silky tannins and great depth of fruit. While they are crowd pleasers in their youth they definitely have the composure to go the distance.

Tasting Notes
Deep crimson garnet with a ruby purple glow. While there is power and depth here there is also clarity. Dense Doris plum and dark cherry deliver a freshness and lift over brown spice rack complexity. There is a deep core of primary fruit and a hint of warm baking spice and cinnamon buns leading into spiced raspberry with hints of red rose petal. A generous yet juicy entry with plum and dark cherry over raspberry coulis. Super fresh with hints of cherry ripe and long so long intense but open and supple. The tanninsare very slippery and seductive but finish with resonant energy lively but silky at the same time. The whole bunch and oak almost invisible but structurally subtextural. Velvet and cherry through to the finish. With a seemingly endless line of flavour 5 to 8 years in the cellar without too much trouble.
Winemakers Notes
As our search continues for new terroir amongst the nooks and crannies of the Central Otago landscape we only deepen our knowledge of the highlights and challenges this place offers. The 2024 harvest sees grapes from our three Pinot Noir source vineyards come together for the first time a vinous puzzle that has taken some time to form. Thehorsepower and structure of the lower Cromwell Basin the depth and plushness of Queensberry and the complexity and detail of Wanaka coming together in something of a tour de force of Central Otago. The 2024 Central Otago Pinot Noir draws from the Georgetown Willowbell and Hawkesbury vineyards with an extensive mix of clones Abel 777 115 114 667 and 828 adding depth and complexity. As has become our modus operandi we seek fruit expression over oak and winemaking overlay 25 whole bunch inclusion with minimal new oak influence. Were excited about where this wine is headed the building blocks are in place andthe future looks bright.
Food Pairings
This Pinot Noir with its depth of dark cherry and Doris plum layered spice and silky flowing tannins calls for a dish that mirrors both its richness and elegance. A standout pairing would be duck breast with a spiced cherry and raspberry jus where the fruit in the sauce amplifies the wines vibrant berry core while the ducks richness is balanced by its fresh acidity and supple structure. Subtle warm spices in the dishthink cinnamon or star anisewill echo the wines brown spice complexity creating a seamless layered pairing that carries through to a long refined finish.

About Charteris Wines

Welcome to Charteris Wines. Charteris is a story of exploration and connection. Its protagonist is renowned winemaker and senior wine show judge PJ Charteris, his wines, a lens to view time and place. Kiwi born PJ fell in love with the Hunter Valley in 1999 whilst working as the Senior Winemaker at the iconic Brokenwood Wines where he remained for 12 years before embarking on his pursuit for mastering Central Otago Pinot Noir & Riesling under his own tiny wine label CHARTERIS. Today, PJ's focus is keenly set on the sub regions within Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand & Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. Harvest timing across the ditch allows him the best of both worlds, crafting small batch wines that reflect the site & season from both world class wine regions. With over 30 years of winemaking experience & senior wine show judging sitting across regional and capital wine shows, PJ’s knowledge is second to none. With his partner Chrissi they have carved out a highly regarded reputation for producing their tiny but impressive wine portfolio.

Just a quick note to say I am so glad I found Australia Tasting Room! Since leaving Australia, I have missed some of my favorite wines. I researched other freight companies, but none offered the personal touch service of Australia Tasting Room. You have a great selection from the best vineyards. You added others upon request, and also gave great recommendations when asked. And customer service does not stop with the purchase— The team keep me updated on the shipment every step of the way! I cannot imagine a better service from people who know wine and love to share that knowledge. You have a customer for life! Cheers, J Mason

The wine was delivered by GSO Courier early this am and was in perfect shipping condition. The bottle temperature was cool to the touch which is amazing given we have been hitting 37C every day for the last week here in our California summer.
Well done!
I have put the wine into our temperature controlled bottle storage to let them rest for a week (mostly for the 3 bottles of red). I did put one of the Rosés in the frig which we will try tomorrow because we are out to dinner tonight with friends.
Your Rose of Virginia is my favorite rosé, above French and Californians that we have consumed with Tablas Creek “Dianthus” from near Paso Robles being a second.
Now that we have experienced a shipment from you, I am sure we will order a couple of cases more but will wait until weather is cooler for us and the wine.
Again thanks for an excellent wine and the good service.
Cheers,
Richard A.

The wine arrived last week in good shape - nothing broken or leaked. Your packing design is impressive. Laying it down for a couple of months to settle in. Looking forward to enjoying it. Thanks very much

Australia Tasting Room is a very fine company, with professional direction and management. I appreciate the friendly service, and all your efforts above and beyond to make all deliveries happen. Most impressive were the instant answers and responses any time I had a question. All during a pandemic! Pretty amazing when you think about it.
Highest regards,
Judy M
P.S. One Contact, One Process, and One Delivery - customers and wine treated equally and expertly, with care. You really can’t beat that! Great job.
