Winter 2022 in Central Otago took a while to get going after a cool and quite dry May June and July turned cold and wet good weather for a surf trip to Bali not so for pruning. August arrived with warmer temperatures and pruning was resumed in reasonable conditions before another cold snap early October which saw some nervous frost fighting nights around budburst. From there on the season built on a warming trend with a mild spring and warm and dry conditions through January and February. A classic summer. However a couple of very frosty nights in late March put us all on notice again and harvest was underway in early April. While there were some frost challenges Hawkesbury vineyard copped a belter we were able to harvest some excellent grapes from all our source blocks.

Tasting Notes
Golden yellow with a croissant like hue. There is a lot going on here Custard Apple oatmeal lightly roasted Almonds and some exotic fruits guava feijoa rock melon and quince. Hints of burnt butter and Gardenia adding expressive aromatic depth. Flint wet rocks and a faint hint of struck match providing intriguing complexity. Yellow fruits straight away with a tight citrus spine of front-end acidity giving way to creamy lees derived texture. Golden Queen peaches Persian nougat and clover honey fill the mid palate. Richly textured with a creamy line woven through a fine persistent acid line on the finish.
Winemakers Notes
As our search continues for new terroir amongst the nooks and crannies of the Central Otago landscape we only further build our knowledge base of the highlights and challenges this place gives us. The 2023 harvest sees the first grapes from the Willowbell vineyard at Queensberry come into the fold. This is a new vineyard with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and from this first harvest looks very promising. While we have had something of a hiatus from Chardonnay in Central Otago this tiny block will ensure we have an ongoing and exciting source. This rendition of deep south Chardonnay is a mix of clones 548 Bernard 95 and Mendoza ensuring plenty of fruit expression with fine acid carry. Whole bunch pressing with minimal settling before a rough rack to puncheons for wild ferment ensuring maximum potential for fruit and complexity. Eleven months on yeast lees and a full Malolactic fermentation complete the cycle of maturation before bottling. Its good to be back on the Chardonnay horse here...
Food Pairings
A great match would be roast chicken with buttery potatoes and a squeeze of lemonthe crispy skin and savoury depth complement the wines toasted almond and burnt butter notes while the lemon lifts its bright citrus acidity. It would also work wonderfully with creamy pasta dishes like fettuccine with mushrooms or a light parmesan cream sauce where the wines leesy texture mirrors the richness of the dish. For something more relaxed even grilled salmon or a seafood chowder would shine as the wines balance of acidity and creaminess cuts through the richness while enhancing those delicate slightly sweet ocean flavours.

About Charteris Wines

Welcome to Charteris Wines. Charteris is a story of exploration and connection. Its protagonist is renowned winemaker and senior wine show judge PJ Charteris, his wines, a lens to view time and place. Kiwi born PJ fell in love with the Hunter Valley in 1999 whilst working as the Senior Winemaker at the iconic Brokenwood Wines where he remained for 12 years before embarking on his pursuit for mastering Central Otago Pinot Noir & Riesling under his own tiny wine label CHARTERIS. Today, PJ's focus is keenly set on the sub regions within Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand & Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. Harvest timing across the ditch allows him the best of both worlds, crafting small batch wines that reflect the site & season from both world class wine regions. With over 30 years of winemaking experience & senior wine show judging sitting across regional and capital wine shows, PJ’s knowledge is second to none. With his partner Chrissi they have carved out a highly regarded reputation for producing their tiny but impressive wine portfolio.

Just a quick note to say I am so glad I found Australia Tasting Room! Since leaving Australia, I have missed some of my favorite wines. I researched other freight companies, but none offered the personal touch service of Australia Tasting Room. You have a great selection from the best vineyards. You added others upon request, and also gave great recommendations when asked. And customer service does not stop with the purchase— The team keep me updated on the shipment every step of the way! I cannot imagine a better service from people who know wine and love to share that knowledge. You have a customer for life! Cheers, J Mason

The wine was delivered by GSO Courier early this am and was in perfect shipping condition. The bottle temperature was cool to the touch which is amazing given we have been hitting 37C every day for the last week here in our California summer.
Well done!
I have put the wine into our temperature controlled bottle storage to let them rest for a week (mostly for the 3 bottles of red). I did put one of the Rosés in the frig which we will try tomorrow because we are out to dinner tonight with friends.
Your Rose of Virginia is my favorite rosé, above French and Californians that we have consumed with Tablas Creek “Dianthus” from near Paso Robles being a second.
Now that we have experienced a shipment from you, I am sure we will order a couple of cases more but will wait until weather is cooler for us and the wine.
Again thanks for an excellent wine and the good service.
Cheers,
Richard A.

The wine arrived last week in good shape - nothing broken or leaked. Your packing design is impressive. Laying it down for a couple of months to settle in. Looking forward to enjoying it. Thanks very much

Australia Tasting Room is a very fine company, with professional direction and management. I appreciate the friendly service, and all your efforts above and beyond to make all deliveries happen. Most impressive were the instant answers and responses any time I had a question. All during a pandemic! Pretty amazing when you think about it.
Highest regards,
Judy M
P.S. One Contact, One Process, and One Delivery - customers and wine treated equally and expertly, with care. You really can’t beat that! Great job.
