A dry mild winter gave way to a warm early spring and budburst was off and charging by mid-August. Nerve-wracking at times with a couple of frosty mornings to keep us honest. Pokolbin got a light touch-up in mid-September while our friends at Broke werent so lucky a scorching frost took out a number of vineyards entirely. Summer brought its own drama in the form of isolated but intense storm cells. Through late November and December mini cyclones hammered vineyards in central Pokolbin and along Marrowbone and Oakey Creek roads. We were fortunate to dodge the damage. December and January both hit 40C with some well-timed rain providing timely relief. The whites responded beautifully Semillon and Chardonnay came off between the 20th and 25th of January with Shiraz following in early February. The Semillons lookexceptional traditional ripeness around 11 alc perfect pH and acid. Chardonnay is only just out of oak and the reds need a few more months but both are looking strong. At this early stage the Semillons remind me of the 2009s though only time will tell. Perhaps the best measure of my excitement is this weve made three Semillons this vintage two single vineyard cuvees and our classic Hunter blend all due for release over the next month or two.

Tasting Notes
Classic lemon lime and grapefruit fill the aromatic profile of this wine with hints of London dry Gin adding perfume and lift. there is some finger lime and white floral as well. Quartz dust mineral notes bring a touch of intrigue to the fruit expression on the nose. The entry of the palate is very refined and focused with Meyer lemons and lime granita like tension giving an elegant yet expansive line of flavour. Length and persistence is at the heart of this wine with shimmering but juicy texture. Lots of primary fruit withrefinement making a classic wine with massive cellaring potential.
Winemakers Notes
The 2024 vintage will be remembered for very low yields and a concentration of flavour that only comes from vines working hard on a tiny crop. Depth and focus offset by a subtle finesse the product of nearly 200 years of collective stylistic knowledge. Look after the small things and greatness follows with time. The Pokolbin Selection is reserved for our finest single vineyard parcel of each variety. In 2025 a mild spring and summer brought a gentle traditional ripening season flavour and acidity arriving at 11.0 to 11.5 alcohol just as they should. Our third vintage from this 56-year-old site the Semillon grows on an east-facing hillside of redcracking clay loam at Ernest Hill Vineyard. Challenging soils for Semillon but the results speak for themselves the right balance of moisture heat and evaporation to drawsomething close to perfect from these old vines. At this early stage it reminds me of the great 2009 Semillons.
Food Pairings
Hiramasa kingfish ceviche is a perfect by-the-glass pairing where the wines crisp acidity slices through the citrus and highlights the purity of the fish. For something more indulgent and social Singapore chilli crab works beautifullythe wines freshness balances the richness and spice keeping the palate lively across a longer sitting. And for a more relaxed crowd-pleasing option grilled crayfish tails with a generous aioli bring out the wines texture while its acidity cuts through the richness of the dish.Overall think fresh seafood bright flavours and a touch of richnessthis Semillon will keep everything lifted clean and incredibly moreish.

About Charteris Wines

Welcome to Charteris Wines. Charteris is a story of exploration and connection. Its protagonist is renowned winemaker and senior wine show judge PJ Charteris, his wines, a lens to view time and place. Kiwi born PJ fell in love with the Hunter Valley in 1999 whilst working as the Senior Winemaker at the iconic Brokenwood Wines where he remained for 12 years before embarking on his pursuit for mastering Central Otago Pinot Noir & Riesling under his own tiny wine label CHARTERIS. Today, PJ's focus is keenly set on the sub regions within Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand & Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. Harvest timing across the ditch allows him the best of both worlds, crafting small batch wines that reflect the site & season from both world class wine regions. With over 30 years of winemaking experience & senior wine show judging sitting across regional and capital wine shows, PJ’s knowledge is second to none. With his partner Chrissi they have carved out a highly regarded reputation for producing their tiny but impressive wine portfolio.

Just a quick note to say I am so glad I found Australia Tasting Room! Since leaving Australia, I have missed some of my favorite wines. I researched other freight companies, but none offered the personal touch service of Australia Tasting Room. You have a great selection from the best vineyards. You added others upon request, and also gave great recommendations when asked. And customer service does not stop with the purchase— The team keep me updated on the shipment every step of the way! I cannot imagine a better service from people who know wine and love to share that knowledge. You have a customer for life! Cheers, J Mason

The wine was delivered by GSO Courier early this am and was in perfect shipping condition. The bottle temperature was cool to the touch which is amazing given we have been hitting 37C every day for the last week here in our California summer.
Well done!
I have put the wine into our temperature controlled bottle storage to let them rest for a week (mostly for the 3 bottles of red). I did put one of the Rosés in the frig which we will try tomorrow because we are out to dinner tonight with friends.
Your Rose of Virginia is my favorite rosé, above French and Californians that we have consumed with Tablas Creek “Dianthus” from near Paso Robles being a second.
Now that we have experienced a shipment from you, I am sure we will order a couple of cases more but will wait until weather is cooler for us and the wine.
Again thanks for an excellent wine and the good service.
Cheers,
Richard A.

The wine arrived last week in good shape - nothing broken or leaked. Your packing design is impressive. Laying it down for a couple of months to settle in. Looking forward to enjoying it. Thanks very much

Australia Tasting Room is a very fine company, with professional direction and management. I appreciate the friendly service, and all your efforts above and beyond to make all deliveries happen. Most impressive were the instant answers and responses any time I had a question. All during a pandemic! Pretty amazing when you think about it.
Highest regards,
Judy M
P.S. One Contact, One Process, and One Delivery - customers and wine treated equally and expertly, with care. You really can’t beat that! Great job.
