Blackjack Vineyards is situated on an easterly slope in the old Apple and Pear growing district of the Harcourt Valley on the foothills of Mt. Alexander. Although just south of Bendigo the climate is considerably cooler and normally blessed with Indian Summer autumns cool night and warm clear day- allowing the grapes to slowly ripen. The soil is mostly very old and not overly fertile granitic soils. The vineyard is hand pruned and hand-harvested. The Cabernet block was planted in 1989.The WineFermented in traditional open fermenters hand plunged and aged in small French oak barriques for 22 months.Bright ruby red in colour. Cassis red currant and spice evident on nose. Medium weight palate Bramble and red currant flavours combined with cedary oak characters on the palate against a supportive background of fine integrated tannins. Balanced and lingering finish.Try with rosemary infused and garlic slow cooked lamb shoulder.Suggested cellaring 4-10 years

Its both solid and well polished but its the smooth momentum of it that really seduces. Plums redcurrants cedarwood and cream characters get the job done with mint and peppercorn characters lifting from there. No problem. Good stuff. BlackJack Wines is named for an American sailor who jumped ship during the Gold Rush era of the 1850s. In search of his fortune, BlackJack found his way to the Castlemaine Goldfields and into the history of this region, with a road adjacent to BlackJack Vineyard still bearing his name. Blackjack Vineyards is situated on the old granite soils of the Harcourt Valley, in the Bendigo Wine Region of Central Victoria, just over an hours drive from Melbourne. Blackjack Vineyard is owned by the McKenzie and Pollock families. The first vines were planted in 1988. BlackJack Vineyards is a boutique winery that released its first wine in November 1994. The wine was delivered by GSO Courier early this am and was in perfect shipping condition. The bottle temperature was cool to the touch which is amazing given we have been hitting 37C every day for the last week here in our California summer.

I have put the wine into our temperature controlled bottle storage to let them rest for a week (mostly for the 3 bottles of red). I did put one of the Rosés in the frig which we will try tomorrow because we are out to dinner tonight with friends.
Your Rose of Virginia is my favorite rosé, above French and Californians that we have consumed with Tablas Creek “Dianthus” from near Paso Robles being a second.
Now that we have experienced a shipment from you, I am sure we will order a couple of cases more but will wait until weather is cooler for us and the wine.
