2023 Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Vineyard Syrah

Frankland Estate is named after the  Frankland River sub-region of Western Australia, one of the most isolated and pristine grape growing regions within Australia. For the winery, isolation brings it's own rewards provide a home to the estate's organically certified 'Isolation Ridge vineyard' a unique source for its single vineyard range of organic wines. SECOND GENERATION WINEMAKING In 1988, husband and wife wine enthusiasts, the late Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam founded Frankland Estate after the were inspired by a tour of French vineyards and two vintages at Chateau Senejac in Bordeaux. Today, Barrie and Judi's children, Hunter Smith & Elizabeth Kent and son-in law Brian Kent manage the winemaking and viticulture whilst they continue to impart their wisdom from the 24+ vintages in the Frankland River Region. We make wines that reflect the nature rather than the hand of the winemaker" Winemaker & General Manager, Hunter Smith The mature low-yielding vines are hand-pruned, hand-picked and the fruit is hand-sorted prior to crushing. The wines articulate the distinctive features of their unique vineyard sites. ANCIENT SOILS First planted in 1988, the 30 Hectare (74 Acre) Isolation Ridge vineyard sits high on an ironstone ridge with ancient duplex soils of gravel and loam over a clay subsoil. The desirable ironstone flinty characters found in Frankland Estate's wines are attributed to this terroir. COOL CLIMATE Located 24 miles from the bitterly cold Southern Ocean, the organic vineyard experiences cold nights and long warm days during the summer. A slow ripening period and brisk night temperatures facilitate lovely acidity and allow natural winemaking practices. CERTIFIED ORGANIC Our appreciation for the environment in which we work ensures our wines and our vineyards continue to grow with our land in accordance to the cycles of nature. This approach includes organic viticulture, carefully nuturing the health of soils in our vineyard, and only taking from our land as much as can later be replaced by natural processes. Our passion for sustainable farming was recognised in 2009, when we were awarded organic certification.
