A dark brooding red with layered complexity the 2020 Mickan Block Shiraz marks our first release from this site since 2017 offering an early glimpse into the potential of these young vines. Grown on red-brown loam over chocolate clay the wine opens with ripe blackberry cocoa and subtle savoury notes leading into a full textured palate framed by spice roasted undertones and a gentle warming finish. Crafted through small open ferments cold soak and minimal intervention before three years in seasoned French oak and twelve months in bottle it showcases the natural depth and generosity of the block. Plush and enveloping now it will cellar confidently through to 2035. Just 1860 bottles were produced. Ideal with chargrilled ribeye slow-braised beef roast lamb smoked meats and robust cheeses.

On the palate the wine is charry and chewy with old leather armchair and pipe smoke wood fire and dried blueberries clove star anise and oak chocolate. A big earthy silky plush wine its enveloping in its way. The alcohol is 16.1 and it does enter the discussion in terms of being one of the characters of the wine it is warm through the finish but it remains balanced. Young-vine fruit went into this cuvee. This is the first crop and the vines are still exploring the soil says Adrian Hoffmann. Sealed under screw cap. |

Tasting Notes
The 2020 Mickan Block release marks our first single-block bottling from this site since 2017 showcasing young vines beginning to express the character of their red-brown loam and chocolate clay soils. In the glass the wine is dark and brooding offering aromas of ripe blackberry cocoa and subtle savoury notes. The palate is full and textured with rich fruit layered over hints of spice roasted notes and a gentle warmth that carries through the finish. Three years in seasoned French oak has added polish without overshadowing the fruit allowing the natural depth and generosity of the block to shine. Enjoy its plush enveloping style now or cellar confidently through to 2035.
Winemakers Notes
With the vineyard influencing Adrians decisions on winemaking this is our first Hoffmann Family Vineyard Shiraz release since 2017. Coming from one of our younger vines the 2020 Mickan Block Shiraz is a wonderful insight into future releases.
Food Pairings
This rich full-bodied Barossa Shiraz pairs beautifully with chargrilled ribeye slow-braised beef roast lamb and hearty dishes featuring pepper smoked meats or warm spices. It also complements robust cheeses such as aged cheddar gouda and hard blue styles.

The wine was delivered by GSO Courier early this am and was in perfect shipping condition. The bottle temperature was cool to the touch which is amazing given we have been hitting 37C every day for the last week here in our California summer.

I have put the wine into our temperature controlled bottle storage to let them rest for a week (mostly for the 3 bottles of red). I did put one of the Rosés in the frig which we will try tomorrow because we are out to dinner tonight with friends.
Your Rose of Virginia is my favorite rosé, above French and Californians that we have consumed with Tablas Creek “Dianthus” from near Paso Robles being a second.
Now that we have experienced a shipment from you, I am sure we will order a couple of cases more but will wait until weather is cooler for us and the wine.
